that completely knocks you for six.<\/p>\n<p>We can guarantee that <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/netflix\/\">Netflix<\/a> drama <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/03\/12\/netflix-add-most-terrifying-show-parents-ever-tomorrow-22712558\/\">Adolescence<\/a>, which follows a 13-year-old boy and his family after he\u2019s accused of murdering a girl from his <a data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/school\/\">school<\/a>, will leave you shaken.<\/p>\n<p>Starring <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/stephen-graham\/\">Stephen Graham<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/02\/24\/invigorating-erin-doherty-show-a-thousands-blows-binge-immediately-22618928\/\">Erin Doherty<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/03\/13\/ashley-walters-i-joined-a-crazy-police-raid-netflix-crime-drama-22718192\/\">Ashley Walters<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2024\/04\/08\/emmerdale-casts-acclaimed-tv-star-major-new-story-will-taylor-20607583\/\">Christine Tremarco<\/a> and 15-year-old newcomer <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/02\/25\/one-shot-stephen-graham-crime-drama-coming-netflix-fans-amazed-22621694\/\">Owen Cooper<\/a>, the four-part series is filmed in a unique and immersive way, with each episode consisting of a single continuous shot that doesn\u2019t cut away once.<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of its launch, <strong>Metro <\/strong>spoke to the lead cast members, director Philip Barantini and writer Jack Thorne, where we found out more about why the one-shot style of filming was vital to the story.<\/p>\n<p>This isn’t the first time that Philip has created a one-shot piece of work, having previously directed the 2019 film Boiling Point, which also starred Stephen and was filmed in a single continous take.<\/p>\n<div class=\"factbox\" data-ico=\"factbox_article\" \u2013 including a car journey from a house to the police station, two police detectives roaming around a school and a police chase on foot through a window \u2013 was something else entirely. <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How did Adolescence film each episode in one shot?<\/h2>\n<p>For a TV series of this magnitude, it should come as no surprise that an enormous amount of preparation went into mapping out the choreography of each episode.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"323\" Courtesy of Netflix \u00c2\u00a9 2024\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\t<\/div><figcaption>Stephen Graham, who plays Jamie’s dad Eddie in Adolescence, previously starred in Philip Barantini’s one-shot film Boiling Point (Picture: Courtesy of Netflix)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Stephen told <strong>Metro<\/strong> how the cast would spend a whole week before filming rehearsing with the director, which gave them time to really analyse their scripts in fine detail.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We were in a very blessed position. We had Jack on set with us for a lot of the time, and myself as one of the creators and writers. So we were constantly changing the dialogue and adapting the dialogue and making it as real and as truthful and as authentic as possible,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n<p>This also included Owen pointing out if certain pieces of dialogue didn’t sound realistic to what a teenager would say, which writer Jack would take on board and implement when making changes.<\/p>\n<p>As for the actual filming of the episodes, Philip emphasised in a behind-the-scenes video how ‘meticulously planned-out’ the production had to be to pull off the feat on their hands.<\/p>\n<p>In the video, Ashley shared: ‘We have three weeks for one episode. So our first week is spent literally walking through scene by scene.’<\/p>\n<p>Philip explained how they would then having their tech rehearsals with all of the crew, which involved walking through the space to figure out what would and wouldn’t work for each instalment.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Making Of Adolescence: The One-Shot Explained | Netflix\" width=\"920\" height=\"518\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HG9XUSnK9g8?start=6&feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Then in the final week, they would film around 10 takes per episode before deciding which would be the one used in the final cut.<\/p>\n<p>One might assume that while filming a one-shot drama, if any mistakes are made, the crew would have to halt production and start all over again.<\/p>\n<p>However, with Adolescence, that wasn\u2019t the case at all. Philip confirmed to <strong>Metro <\/strong>that they would never stop rolling unless it was absolutely necessary, and they filmed each of the one-hour episodes 10 times before deciding which would be their final take.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018If something’s a bit off, we\u2019d never stop, unless it was dangerous and someone maybe fell over. We would never stop, and then we\u2019d get to the end and then we\u2019d re-watch it and be like, \u201cDoes this work? Is it still serving the story?\u201d And if it was, we could bank it and be like, we’ve got one in the bank,\u2019 the director recalled.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I wanted to give the actors and all the supporting artists and all the crew the ability to just be a bit free with it as well and play a little bit. The way Jack writes is just phenomenal, and his dialogue is impeccable. But if you were to write in a script all the \u201cerms\u201d and \u201cahs\u201d and the pauses, the script would be 200 pages long.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Nobody talks super eloquently every day, there’s little nuances in everybody. So I wanted them to have that.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>At the end of episode two, the crew achieved the unthinkable \u2013 making the ‘camera fly’ by attaching it to a drone while the camera was still rolling.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"323\" src=\"http:\/\/pilotshopworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/SEI_243688500-aacb.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-22755215\" alt=\"Kaine Davies as Ryan Kowalsky, Ashley Walters as Detective Inspector Bascombe, in Adolescence\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\t<\/div><figcaption>Viewers couldn’t believe how the camera was able to capture DI Bascombe chasing schoolboy Ryan in one take (Picture: Courtesy of Netflix)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>‘It was an example of the technical meeting the story and finding a fusion that is actually better than anything that the story had come up with on its own,’ writer Jack said in the behind-the-scenes Netflix video.<\/p>\n<p>Stephen explained to <strong>Metro <\/strong>how creating Adolescence felt like the combination of ‘theatre and live performance’, complete with a ‘visceral energy on set because we’re part of a team’.<\/p>\n<p>Christine, who plays Jamie’s mother Manda, emphasised how ‘everything had to be in sync’, and so the success of the show was a combination of ‘synchronicity and teamwork across the board’.<\/p>\n<p>Erin, who plays psychologist Briony in the drama, outlined the two-week rehearsal period she spent for her \u2018intense\u2019 episode with Owen, which took a week to film.<\/p>\n<p>Detailing how fluid the filming process was, allowing for changes with different takes, she shared: \u2018Even through that process, we were continuously surprising each other, and Phil the director was constantly giving us these little tweaks or things to think about, and then just letting it fly. So Owen would do things that would take me aback.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"323\" src=\"http:\/\/pilotshopworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/SEI_237916040-5b9c.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-22463585\" alt=\"Adolescence. I think it’s a real marker of his emotional intelligence and his ability to do this job. He was able to dive in and let this quite terrifying personality take over. It’s a really intense situation, and it was quite frightening at moments. But he really is spectacular in this and so it was just an honour to be in the room.\u2019<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why did Adolescence creator Philip Barantini use a one-shot technique?<\/h2>\n<p>Director Philip explained to <strong>Metro <\/strong>why the one-shot filming technique that was used for Adolescence isn\u2019t a \u2018gimmick\u2019, but a tool to draw the audience in to an even greater degree and \u2018force them to pay attention\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018When we talked about this project, and the one shot thing, we really talked about it quite seriously because I’ve done Boiling Point, and I didn’t want to be known as the guy who just does the one takes. But this particular story, what it does is it forces you to pay attention,\u2019 he stated.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018It’s relentless, and it puts a perspective on things that you wouldn’t necessarily have. You can’t jump forward in time, you can’t cut to another person, you can’t go to a close up.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The director shared that one of his and Stephen\u2019s favourite TV shows is Channel 4\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2022\/12\/06\/24-hours-in-police-custodys-adam-whites-wife-opens-up-about-abortion-17886782\/\">24 Hours in Police Custody<\/a>, which they discussed at length when they were conducting their research for Adolescence.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"323\" src=\"http:\/\/pilotshopworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/SEI_241375264-c898.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-22621721\" alt=\"Christine Tremarco and Stephen Graham in Adolscence\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\t<\/div><figcaption>Christine Tremarco, who portrays Jamie’s mother Manda, found it an ‘honour’ to film in this way (Picture: Courtesy of Ben Blackall\/Netflix)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u2018It’s just that relentlessness of a ticking clock. We wanted to just dip the audience in for an hour in this particular moment in time, dip them back out again, and then put them in a few months later and let them work it out themselves. I think what it does is it creates an extra layer of tension and a subconscious anxiety that you wouldn’t necessarily get from a conventional drama.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>In doing this, the creators behind the Netflix series wanted to make it feel more \u2018organic\u2019, rather than \u2018forcing the audience to look at something that they didn\u2019t necessarily want to look at at times\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I think there is a fine line between becoming a gimmick and it becoming useful for the story,\u2019 he stressed. \u2018You can’t necessarily do it for everything. It\u2019s a huge challenge for everybody.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Jack, whose previous work includes <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/02\/25\/netflix-is-about-to-add-flawless-drama-based-on-horrifically-underreported-true-story-22625203\/\">Toxic Town<\/a>, The Cursed Child, and <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/his-dark-materials\/\">His Dark Materials<\/a>, had never worked on a one-shot drama before Adolescence.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018It’s all about empowering the actors. They are the storytellers, and it’s awesome to see.\u2019<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What have fans said about Adolescence\u2019s one-shot scenes?<\/h2>\n<p>Adolescence has left fans in awe for many reasons \u2013 one of them being the one-shot style filming technique.<\/p>\n<p>‘I have no idea how this show managed to make a 65 minute, one shot take with dozens and dozens of middle school kids, one tiny [mistake] messes up the whole shot, but everything was flawless. Extremely impressive stuff with top notch acting,’ Reddit user Citrusmeetliquor wrote in a comment.<\/p>\n<p>‘It\u2019s so refreshing to watch something that feels passionately creative,’ said SimShadey007.<\/p>\n<p>TheDeadlySpaceman admitted that they didn’t realise it had actually been one-shot because it was so seamless, writing: ‘Jesus I just assumed they were stitched together, that is crazy.’<\/p>\n<p>‘This show is incredibly impressive. I always manage to find something that any movie\/show could have done better, but this one is truly a masterclass in every single aspect.
