Netflix<\/a>\u2019s thrilling new drama Adolescence<\/a> has received rave reviews<\/a> for its \u2018terrifying\u2019 portrayal of social media<\/a> and toxic masculinity.<\/p>\n

Directed by Philip Barantini and starring the likes of Stephen Graham<\/a> and Ashley Walters<\/a>, the haunting one-shot drama<\/a> is already being tipped for Bafta success.<\/p>\n

But taking the nation by storm is the monumental performance of 15-year-old Owen Cooper<\/a>, who was acting in his first-ever professional project.<\/p>\n

Starring as schoolboy Jamie Miller, his character is arrested inside his home during a dawn raid after he is accused of murdering a young girl.<\/p>\n

Now, after already being dubbed the \u2018Lionel Messi of the acting game\u2019 by his co-star Walters, the 15-year-old has secured his next acting project alongside Hollywood stars Jacob Elordi<\/a> and Margot Robbie<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Who is Adolescence star Owen Cooper?<\/h2>\n

Aged only 14 years old at the time of filming, Cooper was plucked from relative obscurity to overnight stardom after Graham saw something unique in the young actor, resulting in him landing his first-ever professional acting role.<\/p>\n

Speaking in an interview on Heart radio, Graham, 51, explained how Cooper was up against 500 other boys to play the role of Jamie Miller.<\/p>\n

go by personally is, in the respect of our production companies, we try and create opportunities in front and behind the camera for working-class kids or people who wouldn\u2019t normally have those opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Our wonderful casting director, Shaheen Baig, she saw over 500 young lads for this, and no disrespect, we didn\u2019t want anyone who had a lot of experience, we wanted someone who is fresh and not used to the whole way that we work.’<\/p>\n<p>Graham explained how they narrowed the 500 contenders down to five… and Cooper was ‘one of those lads that was brilliant’.<\/p>\n<p>‘Normally, you know, in our industry it\u2019s \u201csorry you didn\u2019t get the part well done see you later\u201d, but these last five, we offered them all a role, because they all had such wonderful talent,’ he stated.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018But going back to the one and only Owen, he just stood out, he had this unique ability just like what I saw in <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/jodie-comer\/\">Jodie Comer<\/a>.\u2019<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is Owen Cooper’s next role after Adolescence?<\/h2>\n<p>Following his breakout performance in Adolescence, Cooper has joined the all-star cast of <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2024\/09\/25\/new-wuthering-heights-hollywood-still-making-mistake-2024-21669340\/\"><strong>Emerald Fennell\u2019s adaptation of Wuthering Heights<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"431\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2024\/09\/24\/jacob-elordis-wuthering-heights-casting-sparks-backlash-fans-point-major-flaw-21660852\/\">younger version of Jacob Elordi\u2019s character, Heathcliff<\/a>, in the classic gothic novel.<\/p>\n<p>He will also be starring alongside Barbie and Wolf of Wall Street star Margot Robbie, who is playing Catherine Earnshaw.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/tv\/global\/adolescence-owen-cooper-netflix-wuthering-heights-1236333144\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Variety <\/a>close to the time that Adolescence was being released, Cooper said the Wuthering Heights shoot had been going \u2018really well\u2019 and described director Fennell as \u2018lovely\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>He also said Elordi and Robbie would regularly talk to him while they were having their makeup done for the film.<\/p>\n<p>The 15-year-old has his co-star Graham to thank for helping him land the role after the Liverpudlian personally recommended his own agent to work for him.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What have Adolescence fans said about Owen’s performance?<\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s hard to believe that one-take style, fans have raved over the series, calling it \u2018one of the most heartbreaking series I have watched in decades\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Central to all this praise is Cooper\u2019s performance, which was hailed as \u2018spectacular\u2019 by his psychologist co-star Briony, played by <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/erin-doherty\/\">Erin Doherty<\/a>, in episode I just think he\u2019s supposed to do this job, because he just was able to dive in and let this quite terrifying personality take over.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Cooper\u2019s fellow co-star Walters, 42, similarly praised the youngster, adding that Owen is a \u2018generational talent\u2019. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018It\u2019s like the Lionel Messi of the acting game.
