After joining Gogglebox<\/a> in 2015, Mary Killen and Giles Wood immediately became firm favourites with fans. <\/p>\n

I was one of them \u2013 this stiff-lipped, upper-class \u2018hippy\u2019 couple has a clear disdain for pretty much all television they\u2019re forced to endure and are unlike anyone else on Gogglebox<\/a>. They\u2019re so out-of-place that they somehow feel so perfect for it.<\/p>\n

They wince at pretty much everything they\u2019re shown, including their hilarious horror at Naked Attraction<\/a>.<\/p>\n

For years, I was convinced they were liberal lefty academics, with a flair for dancing in fields and championing peace and love. <\/p>\n

I was sold on their fractious relationship, driven by the sort of bickering that can only come with couples who have lived together and been in love for decades.<\/p>\n

And then it became clear that I \u2013 and so many other Gogglebox fans \u2013 had them wrong.<\/p>\n

In my defence, they admitted to previously pretending to be lefties (like me) back in the 1990s. During an episode in 2024, Gogglebox stars reacted to two by-election defeats for the Tories to Labour<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Watching the results in their respective battered armchairs, Giles said: \u2018Oh God, do you remember that? Labour<\/a> victory, with all those Labour people crowing about their victory.\u2019<\/p>\n

Mary sighed: \u2018But this is going to be even worse.\u2019<\/p>\n

Giles then candidly admitted: \u2018And we pretended that we voted Labour\u2026 We thought we were going to be lynched.\u2019 (Mary then proclaimed, \u2018you<\/em> pretended!\u2019)<\/p>\n

Considering their comments came during the peak hell of the previous Conservative government, which admittedly doesn\u2019t feel much worse than the mess we\u2019re in under this Labour one, Gogglebox fans were alarmed.<\/p>\n

Then last month, Mary and Giles stunned fans again when the latter appeared to back Donald Trump after his row with Volodymyr Zelensky <\/a>over the Ukrainian President\u2019s suit (or lack of).<\/p>\n

Giles also defended Vice President JD Vance <\/a>from accusations he was raising his voice in the argument.<\/p>\n

You\u2019re on the side of the wrong\u2019uns!\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The final straw for viewers came last Friday though, when they mocked man-of-the-moment and national treasure-in-waiting <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/stephen-graham\/\">Stephen Graham <\/a>while discussing <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/adolescence-tv-show\/\">Adolescence<\/a>, the Netflix series widely hailed as the <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/03\/25\/adolescence-makes-british-tv-history-racking-24-000-000-netflix-views-22787394\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/03\/25\/adolescence-makes-british-tv-history-racking-24-000-000-netflix-views-22787394\/\">most important television in years<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Mary dubbed him the \u2018actor who always plays short northerners\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Graham is one of the finest actors Britain has produced, his IMDB ranges from Al Capone in Boardwalk Empire to a violent boxer in A Thousand Blows, and even <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/matilda\/\">Matilda<\/a>\u2019s dad Mr Wormwood in the <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/netflix\/\">Netflix<\/a> musical adaption of the <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/roald-dahl\/\">Ronald Dahl <\/a>classic.<\/p>\n<p>If anyone has range, it\u2019s Graham.<\/p>\n<p>Mary\u2019s comment came as <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/04\/01\/keir-starmer-watched-adolescence-teenage-children-wasnt-easy-22825272\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/04\/01\/keir-starmer-watched-adolescence-teenage-children-wasnt-easy-22825272\/\">Sir Keir Starmer announced Adolescence<\/a> is going to be shown in schools across the UK to tackle misogyny and the increasing popularity of incel culture among young boys. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"431\" src=\"http:\/\/pilotshopworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/SEI_245825388-f164.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-22824407\" alt=\"British Prime Minister Kier Starmer holds a roundtable meeting at Number 10 Downing Street in London, Britain, March 31, 2025. href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2021\/10\/08\/gogglebox-what-are-giles-and-marys-jobs-and-do-they-have-children-15388278\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2021\/10\/08\/gogglebox-what-are-giles-and-marys-jobs-and-do-they-have-children-15388278\/\">Mary and Giles<\/a> because I felt it too. But unfortunately, Gogglebox would be pointless without them.<\/p>\n<p>Gogglebox reflects the mood of the nation. It\u2019s a celebration of multicultural Britain and its multitude of values and takes on the week\u2019s television.<\/p>\n<p>I categorically disagree with every political statement I\u2019ve heard from Mary and Giles but that\u2019s exactly the point of Gogglebox. Yes, it\u2019s a lol-a-minute but it\u2019s also the best reflection of how Britain has been gripped by the weekly news.<\/p>\n<p>Mary and Giles also raise a different self-confronting issue: can I like someone who doesn\u2019t align with me politically? They\u2019re wonderfully strange creatures I\u2019d miss if they left Gogglebox.<\/p>\n<p>Gogglebox has always included right-wing views. Boozers Steph and Dom had a ball wining and dining with <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/nigel-farage\/\">Nigel Farage<\/a> for a TV special in 2014, while Andrew Michael stood as a UKIP candidate before he died in 2021, but neither seemed to be met with the same vitriol by Gogglebox fans.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps it feels more disappointing to have a couple less clearly Conservative turn out to seemingly be sympathetic to<a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/donald-trump\/\"> Trump<\/a>, but still, it feels essential to have them there alongside the liberal lefties. <\/p>\n<p>There are no villains in Gogglebox, that\u2019s part of its charm.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone is brilliant in their own way \u2013 whether they <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2020\/10\/16\/do-goggleboxs-giles-and-mary-on-gogglebox-know-boris-johnson-13434238\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2020\/10\/16\/do-goggleboxs-giles-and-mary-on-gogglebox-know-boris-johnson-13434238\/\">voted for Boris Johnson<\/a> or they worship at the altar of \u2018wokeism\u2019, they\u2019re extraordinary ordinary folk who all bring something so unique and special to what on paper is a woefully boring concept.<\/p>\n<p>They give a show that follows everyday people watching TV its life, the eclectic mix of characters keeping it just as popular now as when it began 12 years ago.<\/p>\n<p><em>Gogglebox airs Fridays at 9pm on Channel 4.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>Do you have a story you\u2019d like to share?
